Good news first: The Android Market recently crossed the 400,000 mark, according to mobile app analytics firm Distimo. While it took 31 months to reach the first 200,000 apps back in April last year, it has only taken eight months to double this number; apparently, the rate of growth is greatly accelerating. Unsurprisingly, over 60% of all apps are free.
Furthermore, with every developer submitting 4.1 apps on average, the Android Market is close to reaching 100,000 active developers.
However, the common complaint with Android apps is that they are generally of lower quality, which Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich aims to remedy. But obviously, with the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S being the only devices that are officially running the latest Android version (yet), only 0.6% of all Android devices that have accessed the Market in the last 14 days are on Android 4.0, as reveiled by the latest statistics on the official Android Developers blog.
To put these numbers into perspective, that?s about as much as Cupcake, Android 1.5. And Android 2.2 Froyo is still running strong with over 30%, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread clearly dominating the carts at over 50%. Of course, these numbers aren?t surprising ? Android updates have been, historically, a mess, with the Galaxy S being the latest example.
Anyone still remember the Android Update Alliance reveiled at Google I/O in May 2011, which promised timely updates for 18 months after a device?s launch?
